Sir:-

I am directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey to transmit

a copy of a note from the United States Ambassador,

asking for the release of the United States $.8.

"Havermetal" which His Excellency states has been cap-

tured and taken to Hong Kong as a prize of war.

I am to ask that the Secretary of State for the

Colonies will take steps by telegraph to ascertain the

facts of this case.

A copy of Dr. Page's note and of this letter is

being sent to the Admiralty,
